Our trip took us along Lake Constance and the River Rhine up to the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen

Steckborn, a pituresque village on the western end of Lake Constance
On this eaely Sunday morning in November, the place was deserted. In spring and summer time lots of people come here to have lunch in one of the well known fish restaurants. Most of the the Swiss part of the Lake Constance region is in the Canton Thurgau. For details about this in tourist circles less known area click here

Stein am Rhein, an old little city on the river Rhine
With its old architecture and narrow lanes it attracts a lot of tourists during the warmer seasons. The Rhine is the longest river of western Europe. It has its source in the Grison mountains in eastern Switzerland, then forms the border to Austria, flows into Lake Constance and forms again the border to Germany up to Basel, where it leaves Switzerland to end up in the north sea in Rotterdam (Netherlands)

The famous Rhine Falls
These are the only falls of the Rhine. Small compared to the Niagara Falls, but here a few figures: Width: 150m - Height: 23m - Depth of the pool: 13m Average flow in summer: 600 m3/sec (winter: 250 m3/sec)
Age of the falls: 14'000-17'000 years

About 60m above the falls
With a little boat visitors can go to rock in the middle of the falls and climb up to the Swiss flag which can hardly be seen on this picture.
